Artist's Statement

My art explores the thresholds between the physical and metaphysical, where grief, memory, and existence converge. I paint figures and landscapes that blend the tangible with the ethereal—portals through which viewers can step into questions of consciousness and connection.

Personal loss has been a profound teacher in my life, shaping both my writing and my art. Through surrealist imagery, I seek to honor that journey, transforming heartbreak into a space of inquiry and reflection. My paintings blur time and space, suggesting that our lives extend into realms beyond what we can see—places where we meet each other again and again across lifetimes.

In creating these works, I am not only processing my own grief but also exploring the universal story of being human. My art is an invitation to look beyond the surface of reality, to glimpse the eternal, and to feel the presence of what endures.

Artist Biography

Christina Rasmussen is an Austin-based painter whose work explores the threshold between the visible and invisible world. Working primarily in oils, she paints landscapes where something beneath the surface is always stirring, figures, frequencies, and forms emerging from light, ground, and field.

Her paintings begin in the recognizable world and move toward something harder to name. Layers of color build slowly, each one a threshold. What arrives in the final work is not planned but received, transmitted through the process itself. She paints what she cannot yet see until the canvas shows her.

Rasmussen returned to painting after a successful career as a writer, bringing with her decades of work in consciousness, grief, and the nature of human experience. That depth lives in every canvas. During her MFA in Painting and Drawing she was awarded Most Unique Body of Work by the Academy of Art University in 2025. She has exhibited in San Francisco and Austin, and maintains an active studio practice in the Texas Hill Country.

Her work invites viewers to look past the surface, past what the eye expects, into the living field beneath.
